A fine example of an early 20th-century cast iron lion still bank, produced by the A.C. Williams Company of Ravenna, Ohio, between 1905 and 1931. Known for their quality and charmingly detailed designs, A.C. Williams were one of the leading American makers of cast iron toys and banks during this era.

This handsome lion features its tail curving along the right side and retains a later gold painted finish, which has mellowed beautifully with time. The slot on its back would have once held pennies, a simple but characterful way to save.

Examples of this model are illustrated in both the A.C. Williams 1906 catalogue (item no. 3448) and in Moore’s “The Penny Bank Book” (2008, p.97, no.754), where it is given a “B” scarcity rating, increasingly uncommon and desirable among collectors, especially in this condition.

A lovely piece of American folk craftsmanship, now over a century old, with a strong, regal presence and a surface that tells its own story.
