A characterful Grand Tour bronze model of the Place Vendôme Column, dating to around 1860, and full of age, charm, and history.
Cast in solid bronze and mounted on a substantial marble base, this piece once featured the small figure of Napoleon atop the column, now lost to time, along with the fine fence detail and a couple of the small birds that once perched on the monument. A discreet chip to one corner of the marble base adds to its well-travelled story, a quiet reminder of its long journey through generations of collectors and homes.
These bronzes were originally sold as souvenirs for 19th-century travellers embarking on the Grand Tour, tangible symbols of culture, education, and refinement. Each piece was proudly displayed in studies and libraries as proof of a worldly education and an appreciation for art and history.
Despite its small losses, this column retains an undeniably romantic patina and authenticity, its softened edges and warm bronze surface telling a story all its own. A wonderful decorative object with presence, history, and soul.
